Nepal – Best Time For Mountaineering

Newly revised rates of mountaineering in Nepal

Government of Nepal has announced heavy reductions on all the Mountaineering Peak Permit Fees for the permitted Himalayan peaks in Nepal. It is also great news for ambitious and aspiring mountaineers and climbers of the world by increasing access to some of the greatest mountains in the world.
The revisions reflect a reduction of 50 % during the autumn season, and 75% for the summer and winter seasons including Mt. Everest effective from 16 July 2008.
Nepal Government has also announced waiver of permit fees for five years from 16 July 2008 for all peaks in Mid-West and Far West Nepal.

If you have question on when to go for mountaineering in this country, you have come to the right place. Here are some suggestions, for weather and climate conditions doesn’t remains the same every year. For example, “The month January 2008 remained dry with large parts of the country, receiving rainfall less than 50% of normal”, claims the Ministry of Environment of Nepal. So it is clearly an indication of climatic condition will not remain same from year to year.

Many mountaineers go to Nepal during off tourism seasons; that’s when you can expect bargains on hotel and travel deals. So to speak, climb when it’s not too cold, not rainy unless you are very picky about this stuff then read on. There are those who have done expeditions even during the monsoon season whether it was for fun or to a take challenge.

For the picky ones, here are the facts:

Best Months or Rather Favored Months ?
Decision by Months:

  • Month March to May is considered to be the best time favored by many mountain climbers.
  • October to March comes second as well. Many mountaineers plan their trip during this time.
  • June 2 July is the rainy season; hence months are avoided.
  • The rest of the months of any year should be just fine although many Nepali travel companies create expedition teams during these months other than those listed above.
  • December to February
  • September to November
  • June to August
  • Tip? Add the weather in your DAYS for Nepal. My advise is to add a few more extra days if you can so you won’t have the hassle of changing your return tickets. How many days to add? 2 to 5 days additional. If expedition finishes before those extra times, you can always indulge in other activities in Pokhara or in Kathmandu.

Decision by Available Groups

Sometime, Money might not get what you want in this life!

Often, the holidays we get from our work to travel all the way to Nepal for mountaineering may not coincide with the expedition groups (remember, there have been a very few solo-mountaineering in Nepal). You will be going with a team. So it’s the best thing to do – Plan your trip well ahead in time. During the above months, expeditions can be fully packed and getting a seat in a group can be a daunting task, for they could be fully booked. I would recommend, contact our travel companies and book your travel package six months or more before it begins.

Did you know that Nepal’s tourism earns more than 70% of its revenue from the expeditions often termed the Mountaineering.

Mountaineering is a costly deal, a hefty permit fees for this and that mountains, and the cost of joining a team is around US$ 10,000. All can add up to as much as $60,500 for a group of 5 to 6 depending on the duration and destination. The cost would include food, accommodation, porters, guide, and transportation to and from the Capital (Kathmandu)
Many overseas travel agents also create travel packages often called as “Expedition Teams Organized for so and so months for Nepal…”, so do checkout such travel agents and inquire. Compare prices with other deals offered by Nepali companies. Then book it.

Plan. Plan. Plan for that huge amount and make the best out of it.

Now if you are bored with those 3 Plan words, which I often do, I will share a few more related contents below. If you have time, read it, otherwise, just bookmark and come back to read it later.

How many mountains in Nepal Require Permit ?

135 Mountains; Permit to be obtained from Ministry of Tourism & Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal
18 Mountains or rather called peaks since their altitude isn’t taller than the above onces. These 18 peaks’ altitude range from 18,330 to 21,830 feet. Permit must be obtained from Nepal Mountaineering Association
That adds up to 153 mountains requiring permit. Don’t worry, your Mountaineering team will take the hassle of going to the office and getting one for you. That’s their job while you do something else (buy some ear-plugs just in-case barking dogs and wild animals are in the jungles while you sleep under the tent!! LOL but it could be a reality)
Well, there you have it the Best Time for Mountaineering in Nepal.
As for me,  I think the best time For Mountaineering in Nepal is when YOU are READY ! n go have check on this updated travel site http://www.newnepaltreks.com for all tourism deals in Nepal.
